AIDA

„"Aida" is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, about the tragic love between Radames, an Egyptian general, and Aida, an Ethiopian princess, a prisoner in Egypt. The story is set in Ancient Egypt, in the context of a war between Egypt and Ethiopia, and explores the conflict between love for Radames and loyalty to her country, which Aida is forced to choose. 

  • Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
  • Action: The action takes place in Memphis and Thebes, during the reign of the pharaohs.
  • Main characters: Radames (an Egyptian general) and Aida (an Ethiopian princess, captive).
  • Central conflict: The two fall in love, but Radames is sent to fight against the Ethiopians, forcing Aida to face a moral conflict between her love for Radames and her duty to her people.
  • Context: The opera was composed at the request of Ismail Pasha, the prince of Egypt, for the Cairo Opera House, on the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal.
